The right stuff

16 May 2008

I frequently turn on the TV while eating breakfast in the morning to get the weather forecast, and maybe a headline or two.  If I wake up late enough, I get not the local news but NBC’s Today.  Fridays, they run musical acts, and this morning, I was transported back a decade and a half when I realized I was hearing a reincarnated New Kids on the Block.  I was as little a fan of them then as most straight teenage boys were, and that much hasn’t changed…but it’s still a little weird to hear something I thought was pretty much dead except as a pop culture reference–and live no less, not on some VH1 retrospective.  They even  have a new album coming out.

I do, however, appreciate their willingness to give credit where credit is due:

We’ve read that we `begat the boy bands’ like Backstreet Boys and N’Sync….But hey, what about New Edition? There would be no New Kids without them. And of course, the Jackson Five begat New Edition. So I guess we were really just the first white boy band.
