Burn, baby, burn

10 September 2008

An ambulance service I used to work for periodically had to replace its burn dressings, which typically sat in the cabinets for months until they finally worked themselves open, spoiling the sterility.  They were too large (5 by 8 feet) and expensive ($7.35 a pop) to use on the sort of burns we saw more typically, and were not even close to useful, but they were a state mandate–so we kept replacing open but unused ones (which happened a few times a year) and any that we actually used (which, as far as I can tell, has happened twice in the last 8 years).

It would be perfect, then, if we could find something that better fit our needs:  something cheap, useful for all sizes of burns, and actually effective at keeping the burns clean.  Imagine my surprise that such a product might be sitting on top of my fridge right now:  ordinary plastic wrap.
