When a geek moves…

…he labels all his boxes.  Unfortunately, not all of them get labeled in ways recognizable to non-geeks.  Case in point:

etoh

Which brings to mind a conversation I had with a registration clerk in an ED in Akron.  She asked something along the lines of:  ”I know EtOH means alcohol, but how does it stand for alcohol?  None of the medics ever really knows the answer either.”  And since I was in the middle of Organic Chemistry at the time, I was able to give the correct answer, which you can find right in the second paragraph of the appropriate Wikipedia entry if you don’t already know.  I sometimes wonder if this was an idle question for her, or if she was doing a rough survey in her head of how many medics knew things that weren’t in the Brady text.

Additionally, since I’m reading Neal Stephenson’s latest, I’m in a mood to remember his second-latest, and any box with cleaning fluids, motor oil, or the like is labeled “chymicals.”
