50 ways to kill a responder
12 September 2009Actually, there really aren’t 50 ways to kill public safety types, at least not common ways. For EMS and police, the leading cause of work-related death is vehicle crash; for firefighters, heart attack.
Mindful of the leading cause of firefighter deaths, and also knowing that many of the local fire departments are volunteer (and therefore often don’t have much in the way of yearly physicals), a local doc has put together a health screening program called Protect Our Protectors. Basically, area police, fire, and EMS types over age 30 can get a comprehensive medical exam, ECG, and (I think) possibly an echocardiogram.
I think this is a great idea. If we can’t get the volunteer departments to pony up for health screenings, the least we can do is find another way to keep unhealthy providers from doing something as stressful as fighting fires, lifting stretchers, or chasing criminals.
If you’re in Allegheny County, PA, and are over 30, you can take advantage of this program by calling (724) 226-7033.
